Recipe:
The thing that I love about a corn casserole dish is also the thing that I feel needs a certain something, let us call it the x factor, if you really want your dish to stand out. The twist that I have given to the usual recipe is what I think is exactly as needed. There are so many add-ons that you can find to the plain recipe but whatever happened to making the best with whatever is easily available and is equally enjoyed by all. I am talking about the good old sugar. I understand that sugar is considered unhealthy but before we follow the humdrum surrounding sugar, we must be aware that the talk is mostly based on the fact that excess of anything and everything that you are consuming is considered to be bad.
So, we are not going to indulge in a sugary treat here but in a healthy treat which just balances off the natural sweetness of corn and the salt that we introduce in the recipe with a little bit of sugar. Sweet corn casserole makes for a perfect side dish which will get the sweet tooth tingling and ready for the dessert that is yet to come. You can count on this one that emerges the talk of the town once you have presented it at your dinner table to your friends and family. Sugar is like a hidden warrior that you have in your kitchen cabinet. Make your dish the champion with this warrior on your side. Do not forget that this is definitely the perfect party food and a great side dish. So, do not forget to whip this up for your family gatherings.
To make this winning recipe, first follow the below mentioned steps to prepare:
Depending on the gathering size or number of people that you have invited to come over, have the right sized casserole dish washed and dried so that it ready once you have mixed all the ingredients to set into it. Use a cooking spray or grease on the inside of the dish before you toss in the ingredients and smooth them out.
After this and before you assemble the ingredients, set your oven to pre heat at 350 degree F. This is essential if you want to reduce your cooking time and get the right crusty topping on the casserole once you are done.
Instructions to prepare the mixture and cook:
- In a medium sized bowl, first of all add the beaten eggs, melted butter and the all purpose flour. This mixture should be paste like and your mixing spoon should easily run through it. Then add the sugar and mix it well until it is completely dissolved in the mixture.
- Drain the whole corn and the creamed corn from cans so that they do not lend a runny texture to the mixture. Add these to the mixture and mix well.
- Finally add the milk and mix until it is completely absorbed by the mixture. The flour should take in the milk leaving a silky mixture in the bowl.
- To this add the salt and black pepper before smoothening out the spread into the casserole dish.
- After spreading the mixture in the dish with a spoon, put the dish in oven for at least an hour. If you observe that the top is still not golden brown in color, leave it in for a few more minutes (maximum 15 minutes) until the fine brown crust is formed. Do not forget it in the oven; keep at eye at this last stage. This can make or break a perfect dish.
Once you have got the right top crust, voila! The sweet and salty corn casserole dish is ready to be served to your friends and family. Serve warm and get ready to rake in the compliments from all around the dining table.
